CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Employees of the Lincoln Police Department are afforded many opportunities to develop their careers. The department is growth driven and supports employees with in-service trainings, opportunities to attend outside trainings and incentives to continue higher level education. Promotional and specialized position opportunities are available as well as numerous committees such as the Wellness Committee, Peer Support, Labor Management and Safety Review Committee. 

Specialized positions are available to qualified personnel as openings occur. The department offers both rotating and permanent specialized positions creating opportunities for experience in more than one area during a career. Specialized positions include Criminal Investigations, Special Victims Unit, Gang Unit, Narcotics, Technical Investigations, Education and Personnel, K-9, School Resource Officers and Traffic.

The Lincoln Police Department has five promotional ranks for sworn personnel: sergeant, lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and chief. All promotions are based upon merit, as determined by a competitive promotional process administered by the City of Lincoln Human Resources Department and the Education and Personnel Unit. Officers are eligible to compete for the rank of sergeant after five years of experience.

Presently the department consists of over 500 dedicated staff (350 sworn, 150 civilian). The department values their support units to include the Lincoln Emergency Communications Center (LECC), Records, Forensics, IT, Victim Assistance, Finance, Property, Garage and Crime Analysis. The department has many facilities to include a training campus, range, police garage and community-based team stations for the Northwest Team, Northeast Team and Southeast Team. The Southwest Team and Investigations are housed at our headquarters.
